Review by Simon Robinson

I first heard Shaun speak at our regional ministers' conference, and it’s no exaggeration to say that his Christian approach to mindfulness changed my life. Since then, I’ve devoured everything he’s written and eagerly listened to his interviews on Premier Radio. So, with great anticipation, I awaited the arrival of what I consider to be his magnum opus—and it has exceeded all my expectations.

Rather than providing a typical analytical review, I’d like to focus on the parts of the book that have been especially meaningful to me.

First, I appreciated the variety of styles Shaun uses. Some sections are highly substantial, drawing from his PhD research, integrating patristic theology, psychology, counselling, practical theology, biblical theology, and, of course, mindfulness. This blending of disciplines is done with great skill, making it both intellectually stimulating and deeply enriching.

However, this is far from just an academic work. Shaun invites readers into his own journey with profound honesty and vulnerability, sharing how his painful experiences at boarding school left a lasting mark. He walks us through his path toward healing and hope, offering a model for others to follow.

One story that particularly stood out to me was how important swallows became to Shaun. When he was at boarding school in England, their arrival reminded him of home in Kenya, where they had migrated from. He uses this imagery to encourage readers to find their own symbols of spiritual significance.

Though Shaun’s thinking has been shaped by mindfulness, he has crafted a distinctly Christian form that helps us remain mindful of God in the present moment. This approach has enriched my own relationship with God, helping me to discover His presence in new and unexpected ways.

I particularly enjoyed the variety of styles in the book. Shaun blends academic, practical, and devotional content seamlessly. I especially appreciated the record of  Shaun’s thoughts as he walked the Camino de Santiago, and also his 'interview with himself' was truly fascinating.

As the book draws to a close Shaun presents his own ‘mindful rule of life,’ which I found to be an excellent starting point for developing my own. He even includes a visual representation of this rule, in the form of a star chart, which is both practical and inspiring.

This is a book I’ll return to again and again. I’m currently working through each chapter as part of my devotional practice, and I believe it would be perfect for personal retreats or for groups exploring spiritual disciplines. In conclusion, I’d say that Mindful Formation is a modern spiritual classic.
