Mothersday223Re: Navigating Mother's Day

It has always been and will always be Mothering Sunday. Never Mother's Day. My mother disliked the dilution of the title intensely. In honour of my mother I also dislike it.
Actually nothing 'natural' about Mothers Day. It is lazy and disrespectful. Furthermore it empties the phrase of any of its potent missional imperative. It is not just about mothers as significant people, but mothering as an amazing, lifegiving, nurturing, essential gift of God that is for women and men. Mothering Sunday, Mothering Sunday, Mothering Sunday.....!

Shame to concentrate on what the day is called rather than the message of the blog. There are many women have not been mothers and if churches are not thoughtful, mothering Sunday can be difficult for some. An excellent article.

Ann Harwood, that is exactly why it is very important to concentrate on Mothering - a gift of God that takes many forms - rather than Mothers, which is something denied to so many people. Mothering Sunday can be universally celebrated; Mother’s Day is a commercial travesty and a potential pastoral and theological danger-zone. What something is called says everything about what the day is about.
