The Revd George Lambdon: 1929-2025

'George was a man of great faith and inspiration'

George Lambdon'What a lovely man was George, a caring minister and also a good friend.'

These words were from a person who was in membership at Beltinge Baptist Church when dad was the minister. So many kind messages were sent to me after Dad died from church friends, family, and friends that dad made in his everyday life after Mum died. The one theme in all the messages was Dad was such a lovely man and would be missed so much.

In 1940 Dad, as a young boy, was taken by a friend to join the Lifeboys at Robin’s Mission Tottenham. Dad had much to thank God for in this introduction and subsequent conversion.

1954 was a turning point in Dad’s Christian life. Billy Graham was at Harringay Stadium and Dad went to the meetings most evenings as a steward and reserve counsellor. It was at this time Dad made the public declaration of faith and was baptised at Tottenham Baptist. Dad’s favourite text was from Jeremiah 29:11 'For I know the plans I have for you.'

It was 21 years later when as a mature student of 47 Dad entered Spurgeon’s College for training for the Baptist ministry. Mum - Doris - was a great support during Dad’s time at college and then his ministry at Sandown and Beltinge Baptist churches.

Two churches and 18 years later Dad retired from active ministry and they moved to Exmouth in Devon. However, Dad strongly believed that the Christian journey is a lifetime commitment. During his retirement he used to look after a small church in Uffculme, as they were without a minister, and also played an active role in Exmouth Baptist.

In 2010 Mum and Dad moved to Hertfordshire to be nearer the family as Mum was not in good health. They became members at Hoddesdon Baptist and both would often take part in the services. Sadly, Mum died in 2013 and we wondered how Dad would cope on his own without Mum who organised everything in their home life. We needn’t have worried. Dad learnt to cook, joined the local U3A group and continued with his Christian witness.

At the age of 95 he took the Christmas service at Stansted Free Church.

George was a man of great faith and inspiration right up until his sudden death at the end of June this year.
