Baptist Union Corporation

The Baptist Union Corporation (BUC) supports churches by


The BUC is operated by the Legal & Operations team and overseen by a board of Directors who meet three times each year and they produce an annual report each year, which can be downloaded from our Resource Library. The board comprises a director representing each of our 13 Regional Associations, the Treasurer of the Baptist Union, the Support Services Team leader and up to 5 co-opted directors (including the Moderator).  Profiles of the current directors are provided below.
 

HayleyBeckett Mrs Hayley Beckett (representing the Eastern Baptist Association)
Currently the administrator and company secretary of Eastern Baptist Association a role which I have held since 2009. I am also currently studying with the Chartered Governance Institute (CGIUKI) to graduate as a Chartered Company Secretary.

A member of Godmanchester Baptist Church and current trustee of Christian Conference Trust.
   
AnnChesworth The Revd Ann Chesworth (representing the Yorkshire Baptist Association)
Ann is our YBA representative and works for the Association on a part time basis, supporting and assisting YBA churches in legal, governance and property matters.  

She is also minister at Harrogate Baptist Church. 
   
TimChowns Mr Tim Chowns (Commercial Manager)
Tim worked in the banking sector prior to joining the team in Baptist House.  He has a wealth of lending experience which helps him manage the BUC Loan process and administer the deposit account range.   He also assists churches through the closure process which can be a difficult journey for all concerned. 
   
RobEnglish Mr Rob English (Co-opted)
For most of my professional life I’ve been a property lawyer working within a private client team in private practice in Bristol and Bath.  I am currently the manager of WEBA and its Trust Company. 

I am in leadership of a local Baptist church in Bristol.
   
ChrisHanning Dr Chris Hanning (Moderator and representing the East Midland Baptist Association)
Chris is a member and former long-serving church secretary of Whetstone Baptist Church, Leicestershire. He currently serves as the Project leader for the church’s major building project. A retired Consultant in Sleep Medicine, he lives in South Leicestershire with his wife, Margaret, three chickens and 50,000 bees.
   
AndrewHawksworth Mr Andrew Hawksworth (representing the North Western Baptist Association)
Andrew trained as an architect and worked for over 30 years as a Director of a Christian led multi-disciplinary practice in Manchester. In 2015 he followed God's call into church-based ministry, training at Westminster Theological Centre and Northern Baptist College. He was ordained in July 2019 and inducted as minister at Altrincham Baptist Church.
   
ChrisJones Mr Chris Jones (Support Services Team Leader)
Chris is an active member of his local Anglican church, where he has worshipped for 13 years and facilitates a homegroup, is part of the Eco Church Steering Group and occasionally helps to lead services.  Chris has a BA (Hons) in Politics, and completed his Executive MBA in 2021, focusing on strategic planning.
 
Before joining Baptists Together Chris was, for the last seven years, the Managing Director of three veterinary businesses within a large veterinary corporation. His work focused on strategic planning, people, finance, income generation initiatives, managing efficiency savings, organisational investment and entrepreneurial opportunities. Prior to that he had spent nine years as Head of the South West Region for Keyring Living Support, providing services for people with learning disabilities as part the national leadership team, and held responsibilities for expanding service provision, developing the property portfolio and leading organisational restructuring.
 
Earlier in his career he held roles with Mencap, Cardiff County Council and Wiltshire Council working in the management of care services.
   
KarenKaneen Mrs Karen Kaneen (representing the South Wales Baptist Association)
Karen is a member and deacon/trustee of Ararat Baptist Church in Cardiff. She has been Administrator and Company Secretary of the South Wales Baptist Association since 2019, and works in the Association office, based at Cardiff Baptist College, as well as making visits to churches and ministers across South Wales.
   
DavidLennox Mr David Lennox (representing the Northern Baptist Association)
David is a former High School Head of Mathematics and for 14 years part of the SMT of a Secondary School. He is a fellow of the Royal Statistical Society and was a Chief Examiner in Statistics. For many years he was the Association Secretary for the NBA and a Regional Tutor for Northern Baptist College. He is currently a Police Chaplain and the Free Church rep on the Northumberland CC Family and Children's Committee. 
   
JohnLevick Mr John Levick (representing the Heart of England Baptist Association)
John is a member and deacon of Castle Hill Baptist Church in Warwick. He also serves as a trustee of the Baptist Building Fund and attends Pension Fund Trustrees as employer representative.
   
KarenMartindale Ms Karen Martindale (Co-opted)
Karen was born in Guyana, coming to the UK as a small child. She is currently the Administrator and Company Secretary of Heart of England Baptist Association, having served them in various roles since 1989. Prior to that she worked in the voluntary sector after graduating from the University of London. She has served as trustee of a variety of charities and, in addition to her role with BUC, she is Chair of Governors of the Northern Baptist College.
   
DamienMiller Mr Damien Miller (Legal Services Manager)
Damien is a solicitor and Legal Services Manager for the Baptist Union of Great Britain. He has a long association with the Baptist family, having previously been a member of Battle Baptist Church and Victoria Baptist Church, Eastbourne, and served overseas with BMS World Mission in Uganda and Mozambique. Damien is passionate about using his legal skills and experience to benefit Baptist churches.
   
OluObidipe Mr Olusegun Obidipe (representing the London Baptist Association)
Olu is a Chartered Management Accountant and member of Harringay United Church - Baptist. In addition to serving as a BUC Director, Olu is also a Director of London Baptist Association and a member of BMS Council of Reference.
   
MohanPandian Mr Mohan Pandian (Treasurer of BUGB)
Mohan is a qualified Chartered Accountant currently works for Ernst & Young as an audit partner. He is a member of Sudbury Baptist Church in Wembley and has held a variety of roles in his local church including his current role as a deacon.
 
Mohan is a governor in a special needs primary school and also volunteers at a local youth club as a football coach. He is currently the honorary treasurer of the Baptist Union of Great Britain and is keen on seeking opportunities to empower local churches to grow God’s Kingdom through evangelism and mission.
 
Married to Amanda, Mohan has four grown up children and our family are all actively involved with life at Sudbury Baptist.
   
JerryPonsford Mr Jerry Ponsford (representing the Southern Counties Baptist Association)
Jerry was employed in various aspects of banking in his early working life before changing careers to work for housing associations in London and on the South Coast. His roles initially involved financial management and accounting.  Latterly he became involved in the financial project management and business development of large building projects. After retirement he served in the Leadership of Christchurch Baptist Church including seven years as treasurer.
   
MikeSouthcombe Mr Mike Southcombe (representing the South Eastern Baptist Association)
Mike is a member of Sheddingdean Baptist Church, Burgess Hill, West Sussex. He was in the Construction and Development business for 38 years before retiring in 2010. He is now involved in helping churches and other charities in building and development projects, where he is able to use his expertise for the extension of God's Kingdom.
   
TimWalker Mr Tim Walker (representing the South West Baptist Association)
Tim lives in Somerset and attends Creech St Michael Baptist Church. He was a partner of a national law firm from which he retired, after 45 years, in April 2023. He specialised in property work including development land and his clients included Baptist churches throughout the South West and Western association areas. He has been involved in local church leadership for many years including 24 years as a church secretary and has chaired a building committee responsible for a large modernisation project at a Grade 2 listed church building. Tim is also a trustee and co-chair of Retired Baptist Ministers' Housing Organisation.
   
PeterWalls Mr Peter Walls (representing Central Baptist Association)
Peter is a member and church secretary of Long Buckby Baptist Church in Northamptonshire. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and an Associate of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health. He was formerly Director of Industrial Relations at Royal Mail and HR Director at its engineering and cleaning subsidiary Romec. He is a trustee of the Central Baptist Association and a member of the employers’ group for the Baptist Pension Scheme. Outside Baptist circles he is a Director of the Postal Museum and has been a director of a medium sized multi academy trust.
   
GrahamWard Mr Graham Ward (Co-opted)
Graham is one of our newest board members having been co-opted in July 2018. He is a member and has served as a deacon of Brighton Road Baptist Church, Horsham. He is passionate about mission in all its forms and has participated and led two mission teams to Cambodia with Tearfund.  He has over 20 years of experience in Project Management in the commercial world and sees his role as facilitating the local mission of churches by effective use of the shared resources of the whole Baptist family.
   
StephenWelch Mr Stephen Welch (Co-opted)
Stephen was born and raised in Nantwich, Cheshire and has been involved for many years as deacon and trustee of the local Baptist/URC church and in its youth work. A Chartered Surveyor of over 45 years experience in private practice he has wide interests including environmental issues and green energy.  He continues to support churches locally - partly through his role with the Buildings Advisory Group of the NWBA, and acting professionally for a number of charitable organisations, including churches across the denominations. He and his wife Patricia have two children and three grandchildren.
