‘A call to wholehearted, joyful devotion to Jesus'

The Well Collective, a collaborative group of musicians and songwriters from The Well Sheffield, has released its first album

Clear The Way is a professionally recorded collection of songs aimed at congregational worship, created over the last couple of years.

‘Our heart is to worship Jesus, and out of that write songs that will lead others to do the same,’ explains Towan Greene, who oversees worship at The Well.

‘We're so excited that the moment has now come to release the album into the wild!

‘We hope the music will help lead everyone who engages with it into deeper devotion to Jesus.’

From the start of The Well in 2015, wholehearted worship has been ‘absolutely key to its culture and call’, Towan explains. More specifically there have been some significant longstanding prophetic words about writing and releasing songs.

In early 2024, the church began to see an increase in homegrown songs bubbling up from its community, particularly among students.

A early version of the song Clear The Way ‘did indeed’, says Towan - and a handful of people started getting together across the following months to write more intentionally. They in turn formed The Well Collective.

‘As a church we have been seeking to diligently pray and position for revival in our city and nation,’ Towan says, ‘and we wanted to write songs that called for and called forth the kind of uncompromising, joyful devotion and discipleship to Jesus that this entails.

‘We began to incorporate some of the homegrown songs into Sunday services and it has been beautiful to see the whole congregation get a hold of them.’

Prominent in this has been Holy (Every Knee Shall Bow), a song which started life in a songwriting jam session at a student and young adult weekend away, and in time emerged as an expression of the church's cry of worship and intercession ("this land belongs to the Lamb...").

The songwriting and creativity continued, and before long the Collective had an album's worth of material. It connected with Chris Wilkinson of Balcony Recording Company in Sheffield, and recorded the album in May, with a congregation of people from The Well and beyond.

‘It has been such a joy to partner with Chris, with the support and involvement of the whole church, to slowly realise the dream of crafting and capturing the songs,’ Towan says.

‘Recording it was such a special day, gathering in unity to exalt and adore the Lord, and praying that the offering of these songs and the sound of our worship might bless and stir people far beyond that room.

‘The album is a call to wholehearted, joyful devotion to Jesus. We would be so delighted if the music can be a blessing to others beyond our church, especially in the wider Baptist family (one song even features a little C. H. Spurgeon reference for good measure…)’
