Journeying to Justice Extract - Lynn Green

JourneyingToJusticeCoverJourneying to Justice – Contribution to the Baptist Tradition across the Black Atlantic is a new book featuring contributions from a variety of scholars and practitioners who together explore Black Baptist relations between England and the Caribbean. It is the first comprehensive appraisal of the journey towards equity and reconciliation among British and Jamaican Baptists since our Union's Apology for Slavery in 2007.  We are providing short extracts from the book to help give an understanding of why this is important to read.

'If you know anything about British Baptists you will be aware of the centrality of the local church in our discernment and governance. We do covenant regionally in associations and nationally through the Baptist Union of Great Britain (also known as Baptists Together). But all leadership exercised is offered and willingly received (or not!), in the context of our covenant relationships.

The important factor here is to note that without a centralised authority structure our ability to address issues of justice and bring about change is achieved primarily though modelling different approaches and to influence others to embrace a kingdom vision.

For some this is a frustrating and inefficient model of being church. For myself I am passionate about the strengths our models bring; we need to discern together and discover ownership in order to move forward. '

In search of Freedom - extract from Journeying to Justice, Karl Henlin
Our theme is in search for freedom is salutary not only because of its obvious relationship with the 200th celebration of the ending of the trade in slaves but more so because it speaks to the ultimate quest of human beings in every generation
