Malawi visit for church twinning project

Cosham300Five members of a Portsmouth Baptist church have been in the Chikwawa region of Malawi visiting a development project supported by the Christian Relief and Development Agency Tearfund

Their church, Cosham Baptist Church, is ‘twinned’ with the project there and they were able to visit to gain a better understanding of its challenges and development priorities, and how donations from the UK are spent to provide:

•    Clean and accessible water -  the group were thrilled to see a new bore hole on its first day of operation
•    Trees and river bank strengthening for flood prevention
•    Irrigation and ‘conservation’ agriculture improving crop yields and food supplies
•    Savings and loans clubs where small groups of local members save together enabling small loans at low interest.

Elizabeth Mitchell said, ‘I was overwhelmed by the determination of local people to tackle their problems and their willingness to give their time for community projects, for example planting trees for the whole village, when the need to work their own fields is so pressing.

'It was a privilege to worship with All Saints Church in Nyasa village and experience their vibrant faith and begin to foster a real partnership with
them.'

The picture shows the Cosham team teaching the congregation and particularly the children ‘Our God is SO big!’
