Missional Leadership Pathway

In 2018 the Baptists Together Mission Forum released funding for a course developer to shape the future of ministerial training within our Baptist movement. In early 2019 we were pleased to appoint Sally Mann into this role, and two years later the project has exceeded our expectations.

We now have a bespoke suite of nine new training units, designed to equip a new generation of missional leaders and pioneers. Spurgeon’s College, who were key partners in the project, will be incorporating these units into their accredited pathways from 2022. Indeed, Spurgeon’s College plans to roll out the three postgraduate units (Enterprise, Discipleship and Nomadic Faith) as part of their new MMin enabling existing ministers to study for a further ministerial qualification. Spurgeon’s will also use all six undergraduate units within their ministerial training pathways from 2022. The materials, however, are accessible to the other Baptist colleges to use as appropriate in their own ministerial formation.

In partnership with the Colleges, Baptists Together are also making the individual units available via learning communities and online access to the resources through this website. Existing ministers may want to access these modules as part of their Continuing Ministerial Development to refresh and refocus their training. Those not yet exploring a call to accredited ministry but engaging in pioneering or missional leadership within our movement, will also be able to access the resources to help equip them in their practice.

The units reflect the skills, practical theology and spiritual formation needs of pioneers and missional leaders. We have produced over 40 training videos from experienced missional leaders and educators.

The units are:

‘Call, Discernment and Pioneering’;
‘Transformational Leadership’;
‘Culture and Mission’;
‘Enterprise, Innovation and Mission’ (co-written with Ivan King, a Baptist minister, pioneer and lecturer in business);
‘Place and Place-Making’;
‘Resilient, Adaptive Spirituality for Mission’;
‘Justice and Peacemaking’ (with a focus on racial justice);
‘Disciple Making Disciples’ (with a focus on discipleship outside of church structures); and
‘Nomadic Faith’ (a unit co-written with Nomad podcast host David Benjamin Blower).

Here is a trailer for one of these units…

If you’d like to see what qualifications they have on offer using these materials, you should contact the Colleges directly.
