Message to All Chaplains - 25 March

This letter has been sent by Lynn Green to all in our Baptist family whose primary role is in chaplaincy.   However we want to share it widely with all who are involved in chaplaincy in many different ways as part of their ministry and service in the wider community.

There might be others in the Baptist family who wish to use Lynn’s thoughts, prayers and reflections to form the basis of your prayers for chaplains at this difficult time.

Dear Friends,

I wanted to write to you especially to let you know that I and many others are praying for you at this time.  Not only was I praying for you this morning, we also prayed for you and your ministry as part of our All Team Leaders virtual meeting today as well.

I am aware that this is a hugely demanding time for you all.  With many colleagues unable to work, restrictions on your ability to offer care and support, a lack of clarity about how to manage regular work with the needs of this crisis and cope with massive amounts of change and disruption, I am sure that you are feeling overwhelmed at times. Furthermore, what seems clear is that we are in this for the long haul and that you will have to continue to minister in the midst of increasing suffering and grief.  As you walk the journey ahead by the grace of God, I am praying for…

  • More of the Holy Spirit – may you be filled with his love, peace and presence and continue to trust that where God calls, he equips and empowers us.  More than that, as clay-vessels, it is in our weakness that God’s power is most clearly seen.
  • Compassionate strength – may you be upheld each day and have the physical strength to follow Jesus and serve others.  May the wells within you of God’s love and compassion be supernaturally refreshed in the days ahead.
  • Wisdom – in the difficult decisions you will need to make, in the discovering of new ways and in knowing how to be in these uncharted waters may you embody and share God’s wisdom and shalom.
  • Provision – that you may be able to buy the shopping you need for your household and that you may be able to access the practical equipment and support you need to fulfil your role and work safely.
  • Protection – may the Lord protect and watch over you and your family.  We know that we too will share in the suffering of this pandemic, yet we pray to our merciful and gracious Lord to protect you from the work of the evil one and deepen your sense of trust that our times are in God’s hands.
  • Rest – when Moses was feeling the burden of leadership the Lord spoke to him and said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” (Exodus 33:14)  May you know afresh what it means to dwell in the Lord’s presence and to minister out of this place. May you be blessed as you find moments of rest and peace.

One way for you to connect with our wider Baptist family at this time would be to join in with our live prayer broadcasts.  Details can be found on our website, by clicking on the link for Sunday’s prayer broadcast at 7pm.

Please do get in touch if there is any way that we can support you more at the moment and, if you have time, please do let me know any more specific prayer requests.

Thank you again for all that you are doing as Beacons of Hope in the places that God has called you.  I am more aware that ever that you are very definitely on the frontline right now and I want you to know that the Lord is with you and we are with you as you hold out the light of Christ during this pandemic.

Grace and peace in abundance,

Lynn
