SEBANorth Northfleet

  • Providing hot meals for people in the area through the 'make lunch project'

  • Developing a puppet ministry to share the gospel in a light-hearted and engaging way for children and adults

  • Transforming the neighbourhood through a community gardening project

BePartNorth Northfleet is a deprived community on the outskirts of Gravesend. In some ways it is a bit of an island - the river Thames to the North, Ebbsfleet high speed railway line to the south and industrial estates to the East and West. This is a predominately white working and underclass area with all the normal problems of this type of place. We have been working in this area for around seven years and many things have changed, especially in the last year. It became apparent that there were things that we needed to stop doing so that we could focus more on community work.

So this year there are three things that we are concentrating on. The 'make lunch project', which we started last summer, is continuing to grow. We started out with only three kids last year but this Easter break we have between 35 to 40 kids booked for each session plus 20 adults. It really shows the need there is for a hot meal for people in this area and great that we are fulfilling what Jesus said in Matthew about 'when I was hungry you gave me something to eat'.

We now have a puppet troupe of five volunteers who are very enthusiastic about doing this kind of ministry. We practise every fortnight and our skills are rapidly improving. This is a fantastic way of sharing the gospel in a light-hearted and engaging way that appeals to both adult and child alike. This year we have been booked for four performances, two over Easter and two in the summer. Not only does this mean that many people will hear about Jesus, two of our troupe are not Christians and they go away from our training sessions singing Christian songs.

We really wanted to make a difference that the whole community would benefit from and also bring the Kingdom of God to the people of Northfleet. What better way than to make the area look beautiful with plants. So we are starting a community gardening project. To begin with it will be only to transform the area into a nicer place to live but we are hoping to broaden this to becoming something to help with physical and mental health. Although we have not started yet I have entered us into the 'It’s your neighbourhood' scheme from the RHS and we have them coming out to see what we are doing in June.

Since stopping some of our older projects and being in the community more we have two people who are individually going through the Alpha course and we have another who wants to start one, we are just trying to sort out a start date. I must admit that I was nervous when stopping the existing programmes but I was sure this is what God wanted us to do and since we have, we have been blessed massively and encouraged by what is happening.

We praise God for
  • People who volunteer their time to help improve this area as well as the projects we are involved with
  • Giving us a new direction and blessing these new initiatives
  • Just because he’s awesome

We ask God for
  • Opportunities to speak the gospel to people
  • To supply all our financial needs
  • His Holy Spirit to continue to guide us

We need help with
  • We’ll need people to help with the initial gardening project
  • More people to pray for the work in Northfleet
  • People who can make scenery and costumes for the puppet shows
  • More volunteers to help with the make lunch project
