Preparing for 40 Days of Home Mission

Day-1LynnGreenMission matters!  Mission matters because we want to be faithful to the command of Jesus Christ, “…go, and make disciples of all nations…” and I am inspired by the many ways that I see Baptists responding.  All over this country, people are witnessing to Christ in their daily lives; cooking a meal for a neighbour on a regular basis, fostering young people, praying for a colleague to be healed, moving into an urban area in early retirement rather than joining the exodus for the rural dream, waking with friends who struggle with depression or addiction, donating to the local food bank, sharing prophetic words at the prompting of the Holy Spirit, travelling to a foreign country to work with the poor and marginalised, serving as a Magistrate; the list could go on … and on … and on …

I also see local churches coming together to seek the Lord about their own unique call and then rolling their sleeves up to serve their communities.  Night shelters, Messy Church, Street Pastors, Drop in groups, street evangelism, services at residential homes for the elderly, toddler and playgroups, youth clubs, Alpha and again, the list could go on and on …

As Baptist Christians though, our commitment to personal witness and mission through the local church is enriched by our conviction that we need to work together with others as well if we are to be truly faithful to Jesus’ command to make disciples.  We see that we need to witness to Christ where churches are not present and in communities and groups which don’t have many connections with the good news of Jesus.  One of the key ways we achieve this is through our Home Mission Fund.  It might sound a bit undynamic, but actually the opposite is true!  In reality our prayer, support and giving through Home Mission is transforming lives, churches and communities.

As you become part of this 40 day prayer journey you will share in some of the stories of hope and transformation from around our Union.  I do hope that you will be inspired by those involved; who knows, the Lord might be calling you to embark on a new mission adventure with him?  If we are to see God’s Kingdom come in our land we need all the pray-ers, givers, pastors and pioneers that God has for us!
