"Over a long period the major denominations in the UK have been involved in conversations with the government concerning the Sexual Orientation Regulations. There is much in these regulations which should be warmly welcomed by all those who walk in the steps of Jesus, who showed generosity and love to people of every kind, whatever their religious background or morality.
However, the conversations with government have been concerned to highlight the profound and offensive error of demanding that Christian organizations and churches should be obliged by law to act in a way that is contrary to their Christian conscience.
I wholeheartedly support those Christian agencies which have indicated that following conscience takes precedence over obedience to the law, where that law contradicts Christian belief and practice.
The new Joint Public Issues Team working on behalf of the Baptist Union, Methodist Church and United Reformed Church has very helpfully addressed the issues of the Sexual Orientation Regulations on its website."
