Fresh Horizons National Tour launched in Hereford
Friday 15 February 2008
Hereford Baptist Church was the setting for the very first Fresh Horizons day conference, the fruition of two years' of research and resourcing seniors' third-age mission and ministry by the Baptist Union of Great Britain (BUGB). The concept of Fresh Horizons is based on the fact that the population aged 65+ in Britain, indeed all over the world, already nearly outnumbers those under 16 years of age, and this trend is progressing rapidly. Churches must be prepared for 'Third-Age Mission and Ministry', both within their own church and within the community, to cater for the needs of those over 55.
Terry Jones, Mission Advisor, Mission Department: The Hub, spent the weekend of 2/3 February in Hereford with his wife Anne to introduce this scheme, and with us "to test the water together on this first Fresh Horizons day". This conference model is now to be followed by at least eleven further days this year throughout the country.
Terry said, "My earnest prayer is that this day will offer something for everyone and prove to be a blessing to all. Opening days have all the potential for mistakes and messing up but if that happens at any point, do be encouraged that it should be better for the next conference!"
Terry need not have worried. Through very visual PowerPoint presentations, testimonies, discussion and study groups many aspects of Mission to the Third-Age were introduced. Individual sessions were kept short and lively, and there was much fun shared during the day. The conference was a great success and left everyone with lots of challenges. Our prayers are that all future conferences will be equally as blessed as our was.
