About Bible Sunday

Bible Sunday was launched 104 years ago. It first took place on 6 March 1904. The Times published a leading article on 8 January that year, promoting the celebration which said, ‘It seems a felicitous proposal to celebrate the 100th birthday of the British and Foreign Bible Society by observing the first Sunday in March this year as Universal Bible Sunday.’

Soon it was adopted into the church liturgical year and was celebrated until recently on the second Sunday of Advent. Following the liturgical revision in the late 1990s, Bible Sunday was moved to the last Sunday in October.

One hundred years on, Bible Society is providing exciting and challenging contemporary resources for congregations.

Around the world national Bible Societies hold Bible Sundays. Some countries even have Bible Weeks.

About Bible Society

The majority of its work is overseas; making the Bible available and affordable in languages and formats people can use and understand. In England and Wales, Bible Society works to build bridges between the Bible and people’s everyday lives, as well as to rebuild confidence in its message.
