VAT and listed buildings

Churches and individuals are invited to oppose a proposal in the budget for the removal of automatic relief from the payment of VAT for alterations to listed buildings. This would significantly increase the cost of all improvements, although VAT allowances would continue for repairs. The Revd Jonathan Edwards our General Secretary has already written to the Chancellor and to the MP for Didcot.

There are many initiatives to oppose this proposal. A good source of information is the website of The Heritage Alliance http://www.theheritagealliance.org.uk/ The Home Page, and the News section contains information about the problem, and links to a VAT 2012 campaign Toolkit. We invite you to write to your local MP.

There are also some e- petitions. One was initiated by staff at the Church of England Cathedral and Church Buildings Division. We have not duplicated this action so if you want to express concern please add your name at http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/32229

Baptist churches with listed buildings will be badly affected if this proposal becomes law.
