Pension Consultation 2011

bugb-logoThe Baptist Union of Great Britain has been undertaking a major review of future pension arrangements for ministers and members of its Staff Scheme. Proposals were put forward to the Union’s Council meeting in March 2011 and were approved for formal consultation with the membership. Consultation documents were sent to all members of the Ministers’ Pension Fund and the Staff Pension Scheme and to all churches in membership with the BUGB and the BU of Scotland, Associations, Colleges and other employers. These documents are available below to download.

As part of the consultation, the Pension Review Group have been hosting roadshows around the country to help churches and ministers understand what these proposed changes mean for them. An adapted version of the slides are available to download below.

It is recognised that many ministers and churches have not been able to attend one of the roadshows. In view of the importance of the proposed pension changes for ministers and of the pension issues facing churches, a video presentation has been prepared to explain the topics covered in the roadshows. The presenter in the videos is Robert Ashurst, who is a member of the Pension Review Group and Moderator of the two Pension Trustee boards. The presentation is in four parts, as follows:

  • Introduction - covering background to the current Baptist pension schemes and explaining why changes are being proposed
  • Minister - explaining the proposed new pension arrangements for ministers
  • Churches (parts 1 and 2) - explaining the pension issues facing churches

Ministers and church officers are encouraged to watch all four parts, in order to obtain the full picture about pension issues facing them. Members of the Staff Scheme can find out about the changes proposed for them by watching the Introduction and Minister sections, as the new arrangements proposed for staff are very similar to those for ministers

A ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ document will also be available which will include many of the questions asked at the roadshows along with those questions received by the staff at the Baptist Union throughout the consultation period.

“[A Church Divided Over Leaders] I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.”
