More than Gold: helping your church make the most of the 2012 Games

This year we host the Olympic Games.  These will be celebrated all over the country, chiefly in London and other large competition venues, but also in thousands of other local communities where the torch relay, schools, sports networks, and civic authorities are joining in the fun.

London 2012 is the world’s premier sporting event with enormous media coverage – with 90% of the UK expected to watch the Games on television.  Millions, of all ages, will avidly follow every huff, puff, spill and saga. This offers your church a way to impact the lives of –

  • Guests from around the globe – athletes, their families and international visitors
  • Your own community – children, youth and adults

Most people see churches as irrelevant and out of touch. Through the 2012 Games churches, including yours, can tell a very different story. They can be the hosts of the biggest party the UK has seen for a lifetime.

'More than Gold' is the churches' network collating information and resources to help local churches get involved, with a vision that local churches could host 500 athletes families, provide 5000 volunteers, give a million drinks, hold 2000 creative arts events, host a hundred 'bid screen events' etc.  This is a huge opportunity for churches to work together with other community networks.

The Baptist Union of Great Britain is a global sponsor of this initiative, and the Mission Department is working in partnership with More than Gold to help churches seize the moment.  Click here for a Mission File exploring resources and ideas to help your church make the most of the 2012 Olympic Games.  icon More than Gold

The London Baptist Association has appointed David Pile as a More than Gold Co-ordinator

Previously David was Associate Pastor at Kenton Baptist church which is in the London Borough of Harrow and he has been part of the fellowship for approximately five years.  Prior to becoming Associate Pastor he worked for a Christian charity called PECAN (based in Peckham, SE London) that sought to help local people overcome the issues surrounding unemployment.  He served there for five years before being made redundant due to a lack of funding for the project he was working on.   David trained at the London School of Theology (previously known as London Bible College).   He is married with one daughter.  Click here to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. • 1 Corinthians 1:10
“[A Church Divided Over Leaders] I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.”
