The Mission Department

In a nutshell...

The Mission Department is at the heart of the Baptist Union of Great Britain. By ‘mission’ we mean reaching out to people in the name of Jesus through word and action. This may involve evangelism and church planting, community projects, youth, children’s, family, third and fourth age (senior) ministries and mission and much more.

In partnership with the Baptist colleges associations and others, we aim to equip churches of the Baptist Union to fulfil their God-given mission to make Jesus known in a variety of ways. For the latest news from the department, see the newsletter by clicking on the right.

In more depth...

Our Primary Objectives are:

Developing tools for churches of the Union

We are committed to developing key projects that will equip the churches and associations of the Union and enable churches to be supported in their mission to make Jesus known through word and deed. Current projects include:

  • Sharing stories of churches engaging with their community through Crossingplaces initiatives
  • Get in the Picture ecumenical evangelistic project for Christmas
  • Facilitation days on a variety of topics
  • Developing a National Children’s strategy and resources to help churches in their mission to reach children and young people
  • Resources for Parent and Toddler groups
  • Education work through the Education Working group to help churches to develop links with their local school.
  • Working in partnership with the Incarnate network of church planters
  • Fresh Horizons initiative (ministry and mission by and among third-agers)
  • Working with the London Institute for Contemporary Christianity (LICC) on Encouraging Missionary Disciples
  • Interfaith resources
  • Resources for issues-based mission, such as health ministry, money advice

Facilitating networks, initiatives and mission events

We aim to be a central support to enable churches and individuals to make connections through networks to people in similar situations. Networks are based around the specific aims and objectives of the Baptist Union Strategy, and include:

  • Rural
  • Town centre
  • Estate churches
  • Small churches
  • Church planting
  • Pastors of Larger churches
  • Evangelists
  • Children and Family Specialists
  • Churches in multi-faith contexts
  • Younger Leaders’ Forum (made up of two young leaders from each of the associations)
  • Youth Specialists
  • Mission Network (made up of one Regional Minister from each association, a college tutor from each college and an ecumenical observer)

Offering a national strategic mission perspective in co-operation with other Baptist Union departments and associations

The Head of Department and Mission Adviser represent the department on various national and ecumenical groups, including:

  • BUGB Trustee Board
  • BUGB Senior Management Team
  • Baptist Colleges Joint Consultative Council
