In more depth...
Our vision is to become a key function woven into the structures of the Baptist Union of Great Britain (BUGB) family over the next five years. Our team aspires to be developing Christ-centred, core value focused and creative communications that will enable the mission and purposes of the Union to be communicated effectively internally and externally. The Department also seeks to inspire, resource and connect the Baptist family.
Events Management:
The annual Baptist Assembly (jointly with BMS)
The Baptist Assembly is a joint annual event for the BUGB and BMS World Mission. The Communications Department manages many of the practical aspects of this important weekend from graphic design to media relations. Assembly is a time for worship, deliberation and decision-making, fellowship, sharing news and for celebrating callings to Baptist ministry and mission.
Leading Edge Baptist Holiday
Leading Edge is a 'Baptist family holiday week', organised by the BUGB in partnership with Viz-a-Viz. The Communications Department manages the practical elements this event in conjunction with the Leading Edge Board of Directors.
Association advice
The Department is available to Baptist Associations to offer advice and good practice concerning major events.
Home Mission Promotion /Marketing
Home Mission Representatives are a key part of the process of sharing the message of how Home Mission giving is used across the country. Our team supports them and their churches by offering training, sending them BUGB materials to give to the church and keeping them up to date with communications news. Between 2006-9 we will be exploring the Home Mission themes:
'A Baptist People, living the life' 2006/7
'A Baptist People - united in mission' 2007/8
'A Baptist People - transforming communities' 2008/9
Publications
BUGB publications can be ordered either on-line or via 01235 517708. Books, leaflets and videos are available to inform, encourage and advise Baptists in the UK. For more information take a look at www.baptiststore.co.uk.
Internal Communications
The communications department creates, designs and produces BUGB printed, electronic & audio visual materials. These include:
BUGB Magazine
This small attractive bi-monthly free A5 magazine seeks to share a range of stories of how the Baptist family is serving God in mission and ministry. It also aims to thank friends for giving to Home Mission, inspire people how the funds are used and encourage giving. They are sent to Home Mission Representatives in our churches and can be downloaded by clicking here.
Daily E-news sweep service
In 2006 a new service was trialled by the Communications Department. People can sign up to a daily email news service from Monday - Friday reporting news headlines involving church and Christian issues/stories.
Transform
Church Secretaries and Administrators receive 3 times a year a free magazine with the latest mission, legal, finance, faith & unity (ecumenical), ministry, communications & events news. It can also be downloaded by clicking here.
BUGB annual DVD
Annually a free Home Mission DVD is sent to churches via Home Mission Representatives. Between 2006-9 the overarching themes will be 'A Baptist People, living the life' 2006/7, 'A Baptist People - united in mission' 2007/, 'A Baptist People - transforming communities' 2008/9. The DVD is split into 2 main sections: Baptist Voices and Making a Difference. Extras include worship and resources materials.
BUGB Annual Report
The report of the BUGB is also designed and produced by Communications.
Annual Prayer Diary
Produced by the Communications Department the daily diary encourages the Baptist family to pray for a whole range of churches and situations.
Website development and management
In 2006 BUGB employed a webmaster/new media administrator for the first time. BUGB see this communication channel as a key resource for the future of the union.
Strategic
Senior Management Team (SMT)
The Head of Department also sits on the SMT of BUGB. This team work together with the General Secretary to share in the servant leadership of the national resource at Didcot.
Communications strategic planning & training
A new feature of work developing within the department is to encourage churches and associations to strategically plan their internal and external communications. Guidance is offered on maximising the impact of your communications in the local church & community, Association. This includes how to choose the correct communication channels and have impact. Toolkits are being created in 2007 to enable you to develop your own skills locally.
Media Relations
The Communications Department is also the BUGB's Press Office. Proactive and reactive media relations are managed by the department working in partnership with local churches, associations and the national resource. Churches in crisis situations are encouraged to both contact their Regional Ministers and the Communications Department if they require specialist support.
