Prayer Reflection Video - 1 April

Peace be with you

Verse: John 20: 19-23
On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”

After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.

Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

Reflection

Yesterday we celebrated the resurrection of Jesus. Christ is risen – hallelujah!

After Jesus rose from the dead he appeared to his disciples in many encounters, and one of my favourite ones is from John chapter 20. He appears to them in the upper room where they’ve locked themselves in because they are afraid and uncertain and disappointed, and don’t know what the future holds. And I love the fact that he comes in there as the authentic Lord. He shows them his hands and his side and he says to them, “Peace be with you”.

But he doesn’t stop there; he goes on to say, “As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you. Receive the Holy Spirit”. And I love the fact that, out of their frailty he still called them to go and share his good news, he trusted his good news to those first disciples. And these seems a relevant word to us as individuals, and as a movement at this time.
